Kilimanjaro is the highlight of many visitors’ experiences in Tanzania. Hiking on Africa’s roof top is the adventure of a lifetime any enthusiast can be able to scale the snow peak. The most important thing about climbing Kilimanjaro is the level of time for altitude acclimatization, no matter how difficult the route may seem.
Physically the Marangu and Machame routes are rather different, the Machame Route takes more days than Marangu to summit, and the route is not only longer rather steeper and rugged in comparison to Marangu. Yet this is now one of the most popular routes to the summit of Kilimanjaro and is especially visited by those who love adventure in their hiking. Machame is the most scenic route on the mountain. The traditional Machame route via barafu circumnavigates Kibo’s southern face offering gorgeous views of the mountain and surroundings.
Marangu having lower scenic views on its way to the summit but is sought by a number of climbers for its hut facilities at every stop point to rest and for the overnight stay. As always with mountains, every route has its advantages and drawbacks.
Lemosho is one of four routes which approach form the west side of the mountain. This route simply intersects the Shira Plateau from Shira Ridge to Shira Camp. After joining with the Machame route, Lemosho passes through the same route- through Lava Tower, Barranco and Barafu etc, known as the southern circuit. Lemosho is considered to be one of the most beautiful routes to the summit for its low traffic, scenic views and the high summit success rate. The minimum duration recommended for this route is 6 but the 8 days hike is always an ideal decision to make the success rate high.
The Shira route approaches Kilimanjaro summit from the west and crosses the caldera of Shira Volcano before heading beneath the southern ice fields of Kibo. Although Lemosho and Shira start form the western side: Shira is the original route while Lemosho is the improved variation. And especially, people love to take this route to enjoy the real natural settings of the mountain. Initially, in the first two days of your climbing, you would have the less crowded paths but the moment the route would join with Lemosho or Machame the route would appear you to be more crowded.
There is only one route over on the northern side of the mountain, Rongai which is usually a five night climb. The lesser know track may not be quite spectacular as the western routes, but it does usually have far lower traffic than the other five night routes on the mountain. Rongai is the best route for people who are looking for a decent quality experience and are perhaps not absolutely confident about you fitness
Umbwe: is a short route on Kilimanjaro which can be covered up within 6 days but, the route is considered to be the most challenging and the difficult one for its steepness. If you have no previous experience of mountaineering, then it would be foolish to try it. The first two days would remain extremely steep, muddy and generally strenuous. An acclimatization day is rarely offered on the standard programmed, but can be added whereby giving the climber an extra day in the Karanga Valley. The descent trail is the same as the Mweka Route
It is a new route, introduced for Kilimanjaro bike trek cycling. But before going to Kilema route you must go to Marangu route for registrations.
